More about United Nations Foundation:
Utopia and the well-being of the world are the end goals for the United Nations Foundation (UNF). By raising money to attain the objectives of the Charter of United Nations, the foundation has made a difference in the most critical problems of the world today.
The UN Foundation was founded in 1998 when businessman Ted Turner gifted the United Nations with $1 billion for its projects, starting with the Program on Peace, Security and Human Rights.
Since Ted Turner's remarkable gift, the UN Foundation has made many grants and forged bold public-private partnerships in support of UN causes. It has also funded advocacy and public outreach projects to promote the image of the United Nations.
In grant subventions, the UN Foundation has lavished no less than $900 million on relevant programs and philanthropic foundations and institutions in over 100 nations. This includes $400 million in endowments amassed from donors and partners.
Grantees of the UN Foundation include the world's biggest public health effort, the Global Polio Eradication Initiative. The Foundation has also financed the activities of "25x25", a renewable energy campaign in the US; the Adopt-A-Minefield Campaign, for the eradication of landmines; the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria; and the ONE Campaign, Americans against AIDS and poverty.
UN Foundation initiatives include The Better World Campaign (BWC), which yearns to fortify UN-US relations. There is also the alliance called the Energy Future Coalition, striving to strike a consensus among various sectors in coming up with politically sound energy policies.
From the get-go, the UN Foundation has been involved in anti-malaria efforts, which experienced a resurgence in the Nothing But Nets campaign. It began when Sports Illustrated's Rick Reilly wrote a piece urging everyone to send $10 that would buy treated bed nets. It was reciprocated by $1 million in contributions. Collaborating with The Measles Initiative and various corporations and organizations, Nothing But Nets now thrives on the same $10 donations, plus a matching gift from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
If businesses, nonprofits, states and private persons choose to give back generously, they could enter into partnerships with UN Foundation, through the United Nations Fund of International Partnerships (UNFIP).
For one, UNFIP partnered with the World Heritage Centre in 2003. In October 2005, the UN Foundation teamed up with the Vodafone Group Foundation to create efficient telecommunications resources, health data systems, and other technological advancements with positive impact.
