The Smith Richardson Foundation
Founders: H. Smith Richardson and Grace Jones Richardson
Henry Smith Richardson’s father Lunsford purchased a small drugstore in Selma, North Carolina. Under his father’s supervision, the drugstore expanded in terms of profit and size. The family moved to Greensboro, North Carolina where Lunsford created Vicks VapoRub. The product became an instant success and helped in amassing the family’s fortune.
Henry Smith Richardson’s career in the marketing business began as a delivery boy for his father, from which he learned most of his business skills. After attending Davidson College, his father’s alma mater, and American Naval Academy, H. Smith Richardson went to work in New York, initially as a graveyard railroad officer. He was then employed in several other jobs, the last being a successful salesman.
H. Smith Richardson returned home and became his father’s partner in their pharmaceutical wholesale and retail business, which flourished under his leadership.

More about the Smith Richardson Foundation:
H. Smith Richardson and his wife Grace Jones Richardson founded the Smith Richardson Foundation, which operates under old-fashioned principles of generosity.
However, the Smith Richardson Foundation does not provide funding for programs in the fields of Arts and Humanities, building construction, research programs in the physical sciences, restoration of historical sites and landmarks, and educational support.
An internal conflict occurred within the family, resulting in a 12-year legal war between several members and branches of the Smith Richardson Clan and the creation of a small entity in 1992, The Randolph Foundation. The Randolph Foundation veered from the foreign and economic policies and vocally encouraged social conservatism.
