The Saban Family Foundation
Founder: Haim and Cheryl Saban
Haim Saban is a well-known figure in the entertainment industry, being head of the now-defunct Saban Entertainment, the company that produced strings of major television series and hits such as the animated series The Uncanny X-Men and the Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers. He remains active in the entertainment business.
A native of Alexandria, Egypt, Haim Saban together with his family and the rest of the Jewish community fled to Israel during the outbreak of the 1956 Suez Canal Wars, which pitted Israel against Egypt. After a brief stint in Paris, France, Haim Saban moved to Los Angeles, where he now resides with his wife, former Playboy model Cheryl Saban, who is now an author with a Ph D in psychology.
Haim Saban and his wife Cheryl created the Saban Family Foundation, a nonprofit organization
Areas of interest:
- Education
- Medical programs
- Children's welfare
Notable Programs and Activities:
The Saban Family Foundation has been actively participating in improving healthcare in hospitals in the United States and Israel. In 2003, The Saban Family Foundation shelled out $100 million to various hospitals during the Foundation's initial phase in efforts to elevate their level of healthcare system and to create better facilities.
The Saban Family Foundation gave $40 million to the Children's Hospital Los Angeles. The hospital is connected with the Keck School of Medicine of the University of Southern California for research on the treatment some of today's medical issues that affect children and adolescents across the world.
Aside from Children's Hospital Los Angeles, the Saban Family Foundation also gave significant amounts to the following medical institutes and other organizations:
- Motion Picture and Television Fund County House and Hospital - $10 million
- Children's Hospital (Soroka University Medical Center, Israel) - $5 million
- Friends of Israel's Disabled Veterans - $5.2 million
- Brookings Institution (for the creation of the Saban Center for Middle East Policy) - $13 million
Currently, the Saban Family Foundation still focuses on programs in education, medical and healthcare services, and children's development. The Saban Family Foundation also fosters programs that promote good relations between Israel and the United States.
The Foundation now works alongside these institutions in efforts to realize the Foundation's goals: John Wayne Cancer Institute, America Israel Education Foundation, William Jefferson Clinton Foundation, and the United Friends of The Children, aside from the ones mentioned earlier.
Trivia:
According to Business Week, the Saban Family Foundation is listed among the magazine's 50 most generous philanthropists in the United States.
