Founders: Created in 1970 by parents of children diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes, also known as Juvenile Diabetes, the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation aims to find and develop a cure for the said disease. With the philanthropic institution's headquarters in New York, the foundation has expanded and established centers in 20 countries.

Area of Interest:

Aside from funding research on diabetes, the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation also promotes special services to those people who are suffering from Juvenile diabetes, such as counseling, diffusion of information about diabetes, and diabetes management.

Notable Activities and Programs:

The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation has been active in pursuing a cure that would permanently treat and eradicate Type 1 diabetes through research funding and scholarship grants to institutions who have programs in diabetes treatment.

Most of the philanthropy Foundation's finances come from two major fundraising events: Walk to Cure Diabetes and Ride to Cure Diabetes. Both events are held across the United States and all over the world and have attracted thousands of people who have been affected by diabetes and want to contribute in finding a cure.

Currently, the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation has been working on five areas of research:

  1. Autoimmunity - research in this area involves looking for ways on how to stop the body's immune system from attacking the body's insulin-producing cells, an abnormal body mechanism that causes diabetes.
  2. Regeneration - the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation seeks to find ways on how to make the body regenerate significant amount of insulin to combat diabetes.
  3. Replacement - liver and kidney transplants are often necessary for people who have diabetes. The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation supports research that would increase supply of cells that can be transplanted - organs from animals, as well as stem cell research.
  4. Complications - People with diabetes suffer a wide range of complications. The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation continues to look for a cure to prevent or reverse the effects these complications, such as loss of sight, nerve damage, and liver diseases.
  5. Metabolic Control -aside from developing possible cures, the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation also enthuses research on devices that can monitor and control the body's sugar levels, such as insulin pumps and glucose monitors.

The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation has worked with several institutions and other nonprofit organizations to achieve the Foundation's goal. Partners in this endeavor include: (1) Amscot Financial; (2) Ford Motors; (3) Cambridge Institute of Medical Research: (4) Wellcome Trust; (5) USA Cycling Organization, and a lot more.
