Notable projects/programs:
Several programs and awards have been funded by the Broad Education Foundation:
The Broad Center for the Management of School Systems
Designed to raise the bar for student and academic excellence. They recruit individuals who have exhibited exceptional leadership skills, from the fields of education, military, business, and non-profit organizations and train them to become the next generation of public school leaders.
Projects under the Broad Center for Management of School Systems include:
- The Broad Superintendents Academy – established in 2002, applicants considered to take executive positions for the management of public schools are trained for duration of 10 months. Much of the training focuses on the critical skills for leadership, such as effective management and policy-making.
- The Broad Residency in Urban Education – a two-year management program that trains applicants into full-time managerial positions. Many of the selected applicants are graduates from top schools in law, business, and public policy. While training under the program, applicants also participate full-time in several activities, such as budgeting processes and opening of new schools.
The Broad Prize for Urban Education
An award given annually by the Broad Education Foundation to recognize top-performing education districts in terms of academic achievements across the United States, the Broad Prize for Urban Education endows the winner college scholarships worth $500,000 for their graduating students while the other four finalists gets $125,000 each.
The Broad Education Foundation also works hand-in-hand with other non-profit, pro-education organizations and several public offices in the United States. Several of these organizations are:
- Chicago Public Schools Performance Management
- Education Pioneers
- New York City Department of Education

More about The Broad Education Foundation:
Founded in 1999, the Broad Education Foundation seeks to improve the quality of education taught from kindergarten until the 12th grade (K-12) in public schools through better school governance and fostering comfortable relations and healthy competition among school leaders.
Founder Eli Broad stated that changing the system through which public schools are managed is a crucial risk that must be taken in efforts to provide better education and more opportunities for students in the United States. The Broad Foundation supports programs that encourages school reforms and requires the active participation of not only the managerial sector of public education, but the labor unions as well.
