More about Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation:

The Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation strives to enhance the lives of the future by directing its philanthropic pursuits into conserving the environment, advancing science, and developing the communities in the San Francisco Bay Area.

The Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation's initiatives and commitments consist of a portfolio of grants. Initiatives are comprised of a compendium of prepaid grants with clear-cut outcomes outlined by the foundation in a wide-ranging plan. They are set in a specific time frame. The foundation's commitments include any activity that would arise from a long-term grant. The Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation has also awarded grants for special projects.

The Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation has been at the forefront of environment conservation endeavors in the US as well as in the Andes-Amazon realm. The foundation's Andes-Amazon Initiative aims to protect regions around the Amazon Basin, by creating protected areas and sponsoring relevant research.

Other ecological efforts exercised by the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation are the Wild Salmon Ecosystems Initiative and the Marine Conservation initiative, targeting marine ecosystems in British Columbia, California, and New England. The Foundation has also made a commitment to Conservation International.

To revolutionize science education and research, the Foundation has forged a long-standing commitment with Caltech (California Institute of Technology), where Gordon Moore once studied. No less than $300 million in grants has been awarded to his alma mater, alongside a $300 million personal gift. Science is also the focus of the foundation's Marine Microbiology Initiative.

Improving the quality of life around San Francisco is central to the goals of the foundation, whose founders are residents. The Betty Irene Moore Nursing Initiative is one effort, designed to rectify issues hounding registered nurses, such as the shortage of their workforce. There is also the Betty Irene Moore School of Nursing Commitment, targeting the UC Davis.

Gordon Moore is the semiconductor magnate who co-founded Intel Corporation, whose most prized invention is the first microprocessor ever. His wife, Betty Irene Moore, has been a staunch advocate for US health care.

The Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation is headquartered in the historical San Francisco Presidio, an erstwhile military bastion.
