The Bertarelli Foundation
Founders: Ernesto Bertarelli and Dona Bertarelli Späth, children of Fabio Bertarelli, who founded the Ares-Serono Group, established the Bertarelli Foundation on April 1999.
Areas of Interest:
Fertility and Sexual Health
Notable Projects/Programs:
The Bertarelli Foundation sees infertility as a disease that can be treated by medical means and aims to eradicate the social stigma that is associated with the said condition. Notable projects of the Foundation include the creation of the websites Fertility.com and TheHormoneFactory.com.
With Fertility.com, individuals who have questions regarding their fertility status are given directions regarding who are the people to talk to for consultations, the probable costs of such consultations, as well as links to other health-related institutions. The website also has interactive features such as message boards and chat rooms where people and fertility experts can interact; people with fertility issues can talk about their conditions openly without any fear of ridicule and shame, while the fertility and reproductive health experts and personnel can freely dispense medical and friendly advice.
TheHormoneFactory.com is a website designed to educate the youth who are in their puberty stage regarding the changes their body hormones is doing to their bodies. Delicate Issues such as menstruation, masturbation, and sexual intercourse are being discussed. The website TheHormoneFactory.com guides parents and other adults on how to communicate these details to children in the adolescent phase. Both websites are user-friendly and were constructed with the supervision of reproductive health experts to ensure the proper dissemination of information on such sensitive matters.
In its effort to promote reproductive health, the Bertarelli Foundation seeks to eradicate multiple gestations (two or more fetuses are present during pregnancy) among women, as the condition poses serious health risks to the mother, such as higher probability of miscarriage, premature labor, and vaginal/uterine hemorrhage. The Foundation has collaborated with the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology to achieve this goal.
