Paul G. Allen is one of the world’s wealthiest men. In September 2007, when his assets already amounted to $16.8 billion, Forbes Magazine placed him at the 11th spot. His corporate affairs include dealings with Microsoft (which he founded with Bill Gates), DreamWorks Animation, Charter Communications, and ownership of the Seattle Seahawks (National Football League), Portland Trailblazers (National Basketball Association), and Seattle Sounders FC (Major League Soccer), among others. In 1986, the Paul G. Allen Foundation was established to manage his charitable activities.

The Paul G. Allen Family Foundation aims to better the lives of people living in the Pacific Northwest through encouraging technological innovations, providing education, and endorsing social awareness and progress.

In efforts to make education more accessible to the youth, the Paul G. Allen Family Foundation in the late 80’s donated $18 million to the University of Washington to build the Kenneth S. Allen Library, in honor of Paul Allen’s late father. In 2003, the foundation gave the same university $5 million to construct the Faye G. Allen Center for Visual Arts, in honor of Paul Allen’s mother. The organization also contributed to the medical field, with donations given to the University of Washington Medical School for prostatitis research and to the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center for cancer detection projects.

Some of the Foundation’s most famous projects are: the Experience Music Project, a museum on music history; the Science Fiction Museum and Hall of Fame, and; the Allen Telescope Array (ATA), a facility designed for astronomical observations and detecting any signs of extra-terrestrial life.

Since its inauguration, the Paul G. Allen Family Foundation has donated $30 million annually. 60% is given to non-profit organizations while the remaining portion is given to key cities in the Northwest Region. As of 2007, the Paul G. Allen Family Foundation has given an estimated $900 million in charitable efforts.
